Sandy Saucier – Novels Alive

“Novels Alive” is a popular book blog that supports authors and shares a variety of works. This long-standing blog is trusted for detailed and fair reviews. Although they focus on fiction and non-fiction novels, Fuzwald and Rex were lucky enough to gain a rare children’s book review from the publication.

The Review

From the cage to the page, Ben St. James takes two hamsters far away from their ordinary existence to have them solve the unique problems in a child’s imaginary world. Open a copy of Guinea Pig Power to sit beside a child and share in this fantasy.

Guinea Pig Power is a rollicking rhyming book that knows where to tickle the funny bones of preschoolers and young readers. The characters break free from their cozy habitat under the darkness of night and the magical powers of a scientific mistake. The illustrations are on par to attract children who have a fondness for modern cartoon style, yet the pictures evoke an old-fashioned “underdog” quality that keeps the characters lovable.

As a teacher, I loved the free-flowing rhyme and could easily pull 15

“just right” vocabulary words to extend the reading. As a mom, the same words could easily live within the text and be brought into conversations one at a time during each reread—and kids will certainly be begging to read this over and over. As Mr. St. James stretched his imagination to pen this, so did his poetic license, ending with an awkward sentence. But it is doubtful any child will show concern and instead root for Fuzwald and Rex, the newest, fuzzy heroes in town.

Whether it is five minutes to bedtime, some wait time for an appointment, or just a reason to call your child over to your lap, Guinea Pig Power is a delightful book to keep within reach.
